Discover the Legendary Ski Town of Fernie

Written By Anthony Butt May 05, 2025

Nestled deep in the rugged mountains and thick forests of southeastern British Columbia, on the world-famous Powder Highway, the legendary ski town of Fernie needs little introduction. Consistent snowfall, deep powder, challenging terrain, and an authentic ski town vibe that’s stood against major commercialization make this ski resort one of the most unique in North America.

Fernie Alpine Resort, located about 3 miles (5 km) from the town of Fernie, offers 142 km (88 mi) of ski slopes, a vertical of 1,082 m (3,550 ft), five alpine bowls, true big mountain terrain and over 9 m (30 ft) of snow every season. Combine this with exciting annual festivals, world-class cat-skiing, fewer crowds, and friendly small-town vibes, and a visit to Fernie is a must.

If you’re itching to plan your next epic ski trip or are curious about the Legend of the Griz, this Fernie Alpine Resort trip planning guide will dive into everything you need to plan the perfect ski holiday. The best ski runs, additional activities to do in Fernie, the best restaurants, stellar accommodation, and more.

The Ski Resort

Fernie Alpine Resort consists of lower mountain glades, groomed runs of all difficulty, and an impressive variety of challenging headwall terrain spread over five alpine bowls. Although there’s an abundance of beginner and intermediate terrain available, over 50% of the ski resort’s terrain is rated advanced to expert.

It’s best to study the ski map before your visit to plan your route across the resort. Breaking the map into left and right simplifies things.

Siberia, Timber and Currie Bowls

On the left side, the Timber Bowl Express and White Pass Chair access Siberia and Timber Bowl. These zones are dotted with fun glades, groomed blue runs and some open black runs. Morning Glory into Falling Star is an excellent warmup route.

Higher up in Timber Bowl along Shaky Acres, this area can get windloaded with snow. Runs like Pillow Talk and Secret Stash are a few hidden gems to explore.

Currie Bowl is the ski resort’s highest point and also holds some of the steepest runs and chutes at the resort. The Whitepass Chair takes you to the bowl while the Polar Peak Chair takes you to the summit. Every single run off of Polar Peak is rated double black. Mama Bear or Papa Bear offers steep grades and stunning views. Lower down in Currie Bowl, you’ll find more open gladed runs that funnel back to the base.

Lizard and Cedar Bowl

On the right side of the map, Lizard and Cedar Bowls are vast open bowls below the mighty headwall. To access these areas, guests upload the Elk and Great Bear Express Quad. Access to the far left ridge of Lizard requires a traverse across from Currie Bowl.

Lizard Bowl holds the most beginner and intermediate terrain, but also some of the wildest on the far left ridge. Corner Pocket is Fernie’s infamous chute covered with car tires, protecting you from jagged rocks. Bear Run is a groomed masterpiece for carving.

Finally, Cedar is like its own little resort tucked away on the far right side. There’s a T-Bar, Triple Chair, black groomed runs with mogul fields, and in the upper half of the bowl, Snake Ridge. Snake Ridge is a local favorite,e so I won’t divulge its secrets. Go explore it, you’ll find the goods.
