Winter at Keystone Resort

Keystone offers a wide range of terrain and natural progression across the resort's three mountain peaks: Dercum, North Peak, and the Outback.

Most visitors start their day on Dercum Mountain. It’s home to the main base area, River Run Village, and has both gondolas and chairs to access green, blue, and black trails. Schoolmarm is the most popular beginner’s area, featuring a 3.5-mile trail.

From Dercum, you can reach North Peak by gondola or skiing. This is where crowds begin to thin out as you’re entering the backside of the mountain. There are some excellent intermediate trails, like Last Alamo, as well as a collection of mogul runs.

For a more remote experience, head to the Outback, Keyston’s furthest and tallest peak. Known for its tree skiing and powder stashes, this area attracts advanced skiers and riders. Get all the details on exploring Keystone’s terrain in this blog post.

Keystone is one of the few major ski resorts in Colorado to offer night skiing, when multiple lighted trails open on weekends and holidays. Beyond the slopes, families love the dedicated kid zones (like the world’s largest mountaintop snow fort), tubing mountain, and Adventure Point, which offers both daytime and nighttime activities.

Keystone has two championship golf courses. The River Course offers impressive elevation changes, variable bunkers, water hazards, and six sets of tees on each hole. Keystone Ranch Golf Course sits on historic ranch land, where original homestead buildings and a touch of Old West character add to its charm.

For mountain bikers, the Keystone Bike Park boasts 30 lift-served singletrack trails ranging from beginner-friendly cruisers to expert descents.

Down in Lakeside Village, you’ll find the Keystone Adventure Center. Here, visitors can rent gear for paddleboarding, kayaking, and other water activities.

Other summer highlights include snow tubing at 11,640 feet on Keystone’s unique summer tubing hill, offering a taste of winter even in the warmest months.

Getting Around Keystone Resort

The resort is anchored by two main base areas, River Run Village and Mountain House.

River Run Village is the central hub for most visitors. This pedestrian area sits at the base of Dercum Mountain and provides direct access to the River Run Gondola and Summit Express lifts. It’s home to most of Keystone’s dining, après-ski, and shopping options, all within easy walking distance of condos and lodges.

The Mountain House base area has a more relaxed atmosphere. Here, beginner terrain can be accessed via the Argentine lift, while the Peru Express gets intermediates and above access to more advanced terrain.

Free shuttles connect the two base areas on the ground and take about 10-15 minutes to drive between. To ski or ride between villages, you’ll want to follow Schoolmarm to its base for Mountain House, or veer off Schoolmarm at Ina’s Way to get down to River Run.

Lakeside Village is located about a mile and a half away from River Run. This area offers a quieter setting centered around Keystone Lake and connects to the rest of the resort via shuttle.

What’s New at Keystone Resort

A new high-speed 6-passenger Bergman Express lift opened in December of 2023, providing lift access to Keystone’s above treeline terrain for the first time in the resort’s history.
